Japan Announces Locations for 2016 Foreign and Finance Ministers Meetings

June 27, 2015

Japan has announced that under its G7 presidency in 2016, the G7 foreign ministers will meet in Hiroshima and the G7 finance ministers will meet in Sendai.

Hiroshima, which was the destroyed during World War II, is an appropriate place "to send out messages for world peace, prosperity and the future as the city is a symbol of reconstruction from the atomic bombing," said Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida.

Sendai "could be a symbol of reconstruction of Japan's north-eastern region," which was devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, according to Finance Minister Taro Aso.

While no dates have been announced, these meetings are expected to take place in March and April 2016. The locations of at least six more ministerial meetings, likely including meetings of energy, environment and economy, will be announced as early as July 2015.
