SOMMET D'EVIAN 2003

Statement by the French and Swiss Ministers of Foreign Affairs on the G8 summit in Evian
February 28, 2003, Paris

The two Ministers of Foreign Affairs stressed their desire to cooperate, in accordance with the long tradition established between France and Switzerland, with a view to ensuring the smooth progress of the Evian summit (1st - 3rd June 2003), in a spirit of openness and dialogue with all.

Organising the Summit on the shores of Lake Geneva is a far-reaching move, requiring close cooperation that is unprecedented between the two countries.

The two Ministers reviewed the preparatory arrangements for the various aspects of the Summit and noted that the bilateral working groups set up for this purpose were making good progress.

They noted the progress on the drafting of a bilateral agreement governing the legal arrangements for cooperation between them, in particular in the police, customs and military sectors. In addition, they agreed on the principle of France sharing the costs Switzerland has incurred in organising the Summit. The two countries share a firm desire to conclude an agreement as soon as possible.
