BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

LORD ROBERT ARMSTRONG served as the Prime Minister's Personal Representative for the Economic Summit from 1978 to 1984, and is also a former Secretary to the British Cabinet. Throughout his distinguished career as a member of the British civil service he has worked in numerous capacities. He served as Principal of the Treasury from 1955 to 1957 and again from 1959 to 1964; as Principal Private Secretary of State to the Prime Minister from 1970 to 1975; as Permanent Undersecretary of State from 1977 to 1979; and as Head of the Home Civil Service from 1982 to 1988.

In addition to his prominent role in the civil service, Lord Robert Armstrong has served as secretary for the Board of Directors for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden since 1968, and has been a member of the Governing Body of the Royal Academy of Music since 1975. Lord Armstrong was also appointed to the Rhodes Trust in 1975. He was educated at Dragon School Oxford, at Eton, and at Christ Church, Oxford.

Recently retired, Lord Robert Armstrong received his title in February 1988.
