February 1996: the Information Society Initiative was launched by the British Government. 6 November 1996: The Information Society initiative is launched across the whole government. The Information Society initiative includes the involvement of 10 government ministries and two agencies, including the Cabinet Office. Britain is a partner with Canada in the G7 Government On-line pilot project.

On December 3, 1996 the government announced funding for the ISI for projects in conjunction with the private sector.
