G8 Research Group to Release Interim Compliance Report at University of Toronto Munk Centre for International Studies

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

TORONTO, Ontario – The G8 Research Group, the world’s leading independent research institute providing information and expert analysis on the G8, will release its annual Interim Compliance Report on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at the Munk Centre for International Studies.

The Interim Compliance Report is an assessment of the progress made by each G8 member towards complying with the commitments made at the 2007 Heiligendamm G8 Summit. Among the 23 commitments monitored by the G8 Research Group are climate change, counter-terrorism, African development and security, trade, non-proliferation, intellectual property rights, raw materials, and aid to Darfur. G8 members are individually assessed and scored on their compliance with each commitment and then compared with the other member states.

Since 1996 the G8 Research Group has monitored G8 compliance. The interim report is published after the presidency of the G8 has passed from one country to the next, with the final report published just before the annual leaders summit. These internationally recognized reports garner significant attention from governments, academics, policy institutes, advocacy groups, media, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations. They are the most comprehensive and analytically rigorous reports of their kind and among only a handful of reports in the world that compare all eight G8 members and the European Union across such a wide array of commitments.

The G8 Research Group is a network of scholars, professionals and students interested in the activities of the G8. Founded in 1987 and based at the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto, it is partnered with Oxford University and the State University Higher School of Economics (Moscow). Directed by Professor John Kirton, a leading international expert on the G8 and global governance, the G8 Research Group has more than 150 analysts recruited from a pool of top-calibre undergraduate and graduate students.

The results of the Heiligendamm Interim Compliance Report will be released on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. in the Munk Centre for International Studies. Professor Kirton will be joined by lead analysts from the G8 Research Group to discuss the report’s findings. They will be available for interviews following the conference. Interested members of the media and the public are encouraged (but not required) to register for the event at http://webapp.mcis.utoronto.ca/EventDetails.aspx?eventid=5876.
